One of the most respected women in the Unites and the former first lady spoke out at the Obama Foundation Summit about the Girls Opportunity Alliance and more.
All of enjoy a rare public appearance from Michelle Obama. The former president of United States, Barack Obama and his wife gathered at the roundtable at this year’s Obama Foundation Summit in Chicago. Michelle Obama has been dedicated to this motivating foundation since her husband departed from the White House.
The Girls’ Opportunity Alliance has as their main goal, to empower young girls and women through education, leadership and self-care. Michelle hosted the roundtable conversation between the executive director of the alliance, Tiffany Drake and the CEO, Tina Tchen. Also, Barack Obama’s personal sister, Maya Soetoro-Ng was seated at the roundtable while they explained the nationwide progress of the alliance.
Michelle Obama gracefully explained that the purpose of the alliance is to educate girls throughout the United States and the entire world. They want young girls to transform their passions into actions by creating resources and organizations that empower them to speak out about their beliefs and issues that concern them.
Michelle Obama didn’t let the spotlight shine on her by directing the attention to the champions behind this alliance. It is not just one person, but also the millions of young adolescent girls from around the world who share the same heart, same brain and knowledge.
Knowledge doesn’t change the essence of who we are, as we will still look the same, have the same height, last name and skin color. But knowledge changes the fate of a girl, by helping them make better choices based on their ability. Escaping the stereotyping that they have to follow in their parent’s footsteps, they can raise above and create their own fate.
The goal of the Girls’ Opportunity Alliance is to help girls from the eastside of Chicago or from a small-unknown village in Cambodia to reach their hopes, dreams and desires. The former first lady continued by stating that all girls, no matter where they live aren’t different, we are all living on the same planet and that fact is what is going to change the world.
Obama shared her thoughts on the following aspects that her alliance is focused on helping young girls embrace their future.
Self-care
Obama believes women and young girls are too hard on themselves, always striving to do more for others, whether they are helping their family, friends or others. There is no need to feel guilty for taking care of our emotional needs. If you don’t learn to care for yourself first, it will be impossible to care for those around us.
Have a strong work ethic
Obama gave a beautiful illustration of waking up day after day and scattering pebbles along a path; those pebbles will show others or us the way in the future. But the only way to feel gratification is by laying those pebbles, as nobody will do it for you.
Empowerment
Michelle Obama spoke once again about those pebbles that we need to lay down. Sometimes, that one pebble we lay down is all another little girl needs to be empowered to break away from her fate. Remember your actions and words are setting the pattern for others. Empower others by raising the bar for them and helping them to find their own voice.
